Some people celebrate Valentine’s day on February 14 while others claim their lottery prizes.
Edwin Castro was the sole owner of a record-breaking Powerball jackpot scooped on November 7, 2022. However, he took his time to come forward and chose February 14, 2023 as the day in which he actually claimed his Powerball prize.
By doing so, he became the biggest Powerball winner but also the biggest winner in US lottery history!
Edwin Castro decided to only share his name and did not participate to the press conference following his name reveal.
During the conference, Carolyn Becker, California’s Lottery spokeswoman declared:
“We get to celebrate a real human today. Although he would like to remain private, we’re very excited to announce a winner and we’re so pleased that he’s particularly supportive of our mission.”
Mr Castro may have decided to not reveal much about himself but he chose to share a statement read by Mrs Becker which stated how ecstatic he is about his win but also that he is very happy about the fact that his win helps education in California as well. This is what his statement looked like:
“As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system. The mission of the California lottery, which is to provide supplemental funding for California public education both public schools and colleges, makes this a huge win for the state. As someone who received the rewards of being educated in the California public education system, it’s gratifying to hear that as a result of my win, the California school system greatly benefits as well.”
Edwin Castro opted for the lump sum payment of $997.6 Million. However, the final amount will be slightly smaller as Mr Castro will have to pay taxes on his Powerball win.
